Malawi is our newest link in Africa. We have been in contact with an organisation called Phunzira who are undergoing a project to help local children and the community.
The aim of this project is to construct a centre in the north of Malawi that will act as a healthy learning environment for students from nearby schools and members of the local community to access free of charge.
The centre will be based in or near to Ruarwe, a small town on the lakeshore of Lake Malawi (formerly Lake Nyasa) that lies roughly 80km north of Nkhata Bay and 493km north of the capital Lilongwe.
At present the only access to Ruarwe is by boat, ferry or by foot. There is no power or electricity, although reception for mobile phones has very recently become available (though it is invariably weak).
We are looking for volunteers with skills in construction and sustainable development, however anyone who is willing to work on the project will be of great use. We would hope to send volunteers out to Malawi during July and August of this year.
We have recently been in touch with Phunzira and the accommodation is being provided with a 50% discount. Camping is free at the nearby lodge, and for a 6 week visit it will cost £150 for a chalet or £90 for dormitory accommodation. The website for the accommodation is:
www.lake-paradise.com
If anyone is interested in any way shape or form then please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Are you in a position to give one or two months of your time this coming July/August?
Do you have the skills and the determination to help those who need it.
If you are interested in any way, shape or form then don't hesitate to get in touch.
Here is the basic floorplan of the project:
